I am Shreya and I was 14 years old when I was diagnosed with Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) where scoliosis develops without any known cause. My parents noticed abnormal shape of my back with spine curving to one side and it has progressed from barely noticeable to severe within a span of three months since it was first noticed.
I thought I was born normal. I grew up thinking I was same as everyone. I never thought that something would change my life drastically as scoliosis. The first x-ray of my spine left me completely broken.
Bracing was not an option given the magnitude of my curve angle of 750. Before operation I had one week of traction through a ring around my head and weights attached to hospital bed and this was told that this will increases the flexibility of the curve and help achieve more correction at time of surgery. After one week of traction I underwent uneventful scoliosis correction surgery because of careful pre-operative planning, meticulous surgical technique, use of available modern techniques and real time spinal cord monitoring (Intra Operative Neuro Monitoring (IONM)) which are part of safe spine surgery protocols of Dr.Muralidharan’s daily practice.
I was in the hospital for 5 days. I was about three inch taller and shape of my back was perfect post surgery. At 1 month post-surgery I started going to school classes. I resumed all my sports, swimming and dance activities at 3 months post surgery.
I’m proud of the scar on my back. Enduring traction and spinal fusion surgery helped me develop a depth of character that has convinced me that I can do anything that I set my mind to.
Really felt happy and surprised to see the 100% result after surgery.
Be strong and positive. I was happy that I could get through this.

I am Towfiq 23 years old from Dhaka in Bangladesh, I was born with a rare condition called arthrogryposis multiplex congenita. This is a rare birth condition where the joints are extremely stiff and contracted. Up until the age of 11, though I was stunted by the bent joints, I was normal in terms of weight and other indicators. However, at the age of 11, I suddenly began losing weight and lost most of my muscle mass. The result was that my arms and legs began to appear like just a layer of skin covering bone.
Despite all these troubles, I managed to carry on my life and get an education, even entering college. However, in the last six years, my spine had become bent, leaving my torso twisted to the left.
At age 23, I weighed just 27 kg because my bent spine was pushing into my stomach and preventing me from eating properly. My lungs were under similar pressure, making breathing a difficult job. And because the bend was so severe that my ribs were rubbing against his pelvis was in constant, debilitating pain.
I met Dr Muralidharan in 2018 and got all the trust and confidence in the first meeting itself to choose him as my surgeon. He told me that because of my bent limbs, bent knees and bent hips, my body was forced to be in an awkward position for me to maintain balance when I stood and hence, my spine became twisted to allow me to maintain my centre of gravity.
A comprehensive set of blood, genetic, neurological, lung function and cardiological tests followed. The primary concern for Dr Muralidharan was to assess whether my body could withstand such a major surgical procedure. Also my earlier episode of muscle mass loss was a key concern too, as losing muscle mass after the surgery would lead to further complications. So I had to undergo genetic screening and muscle biopsies to look for whether there were any signs of known muscular dystrophy.
Though all the tests were promising, Dr Muralidharan said that his other colleagues were skeptical of the possibilities of success, raising the risks of wound infections, wound breakdown and paralysis. All of the risks and possibilities were placed before me and my family when I was counseled before opting for the surgery. Ultimately, I chose to go ahead with the procedure despite the risks, as I desperately sought relief from the pain that haunted me constantly.
Dr Muralidharan, openly said that my case is real challenge. Even with a normal flexible curve, they only aim to correct 60%-70% that some residual curvature remains which is acceptable. But in my case Dr Muralidharan felt that if we manage around 40%-50% correction that is more than enough.
Even before the surgery could take place, I had to undergo intensive treatments as a first step. For two weeks, I was placed under halo-gravity traction, where a metal ring is placed around the head and attached via pulley to weights, so that the spine is gradually stretched. I was also prescribed breathing exercises to improve my lung function, and was given protein supplements in my diet to build up his protein levels before the surgery.
On day of surgery I know the procedure itself involved complications at every step due to multiple challenges in my case. I was wheeled into surgery at 8am and it took 3 hours just to set me positioned for the surgery and the neuro-monitoring, which would keep track of any possibilities of neurological damage during the procedure. Similarly, a special kind of anaesthesia had to be used so that the neuro-monitoring was not interrupted. And the dosage had to be carefully calibrated because of my extreme underweight.
Positioning me on operation table during the surgery was crucial because they had to be cautious so they don’t stretch or break my already flexed, contracted joints, and that my pressure points were protected.
The procedure itself lasted for six hours and I was told that first they released tight soft tissues around the spine. Then, the vertebral joints around the spinal curve had to be meticulously broken to allow it to be flexible enough for realignment. Finally, using screws and a rod contoured to the desired shape, my spine was fixed in its new alignment.
In the end, my surgery turned out to be a marvelous success. I spent one day in the ICU for observation. By the second day, I was up and about. By the fifth day, I was out of the hospital, and by the tenth day, I had returned home to Daka.
I recently came back for a follow-up and I am very happy with the shape of my back and all of my pain has gone. I am also breathing much more comfortably. I have gained 3kg since the surgery, and am able to eat more frequently and eat better. I have happily returned to my college life.
Thanks a ton to Dr Muralidharan and his team.
Mahek is 13 years aged girl from West Bengal. She is special child born with develeopmental defects affecting several parts of the body. She congenital kyphosis where there is exaggerateround back of the upper spine (hunchback). She also had heart repair at 1 year age. She has permanent tracheostomy (opening in the neck for breathing) and she cannot vocalise much. She has global developmental delay and weighs 20 kgs.Normally Mahek enjoys walking and she started having difficulty in walking and became wheelchair dependent because of severe progressive kyphotic spine and spinal cord compression.
Mahek parents consulted several surgeons across country and almost last hope of daughter walking again as was left with the impression that surgery not worth to take risk and nothing to gain.
Mahek parents met Dr Muralidharan in 2019 and got all the trust and confidence in the first meeting itself to have Mahek’s surgical journey under his care. Dr Muralidharan explained all challenges starting from evaluation, optimisation, tracheostomy care, intra operative and post-operative issues.
Initially she had halo gravity traction for two weeks to stetch the spine and this was done as day care set up as she is phobic to hospitals.
Her surgery was uneventful and Mahek is now mobile on her feet without assistance.
I am Farzana and I was 12 years old when I was diagnosed with Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) where scoliosis develops without any known cause. My parents noticed abnormal shape of my back with spine curving to one side and it has progressed from barely noticeable to severe within a span of six months since it was first noticed.
Bracing was not an option given the magnitude of my curve angle of 1070. My parents took opinion from several doctors and I finally ended up having treatment under the care of Dr.Muralidharan. I underwent uneventful scoliosis correction surgery and was in the hospital for 5 days.
Yeah! I am fine now after surgery. Now I get a positive vibes everyday when I wake up. Actually before my surgery I had no idea what the result would in future so I was hoping for a miracle to happen and it actually happened. I was about two inch taller and shape of my back was perfect post surgery. I can feel a new world.
I am Radhika from Ahmadabad and I was born with a condition called congenital scoliosis which is a sideways curvature of the spine that is caused by a defect in the vertebrae (spine bone) that was present at birth. It occurs in only 1 in 10,000 newborns and is much less common than the type of scoliosis that begins in adolescence.
Children with congenital scoliosis sometimes have other health issues, such as kidney, heart or bladder problems. I did have a heart problem at birth for which I had heart surgery very early in my life at age of 1 year. Even though I was born with defect in spine bone the congenital scoliosis became noticeable when I was 4 years old and since then the scoliosis curve started to grow along with my growth.
At age of 11 years my curve became severe and ended up having treatment for scoliosis under the care of Dr Muralidharan. Before operation I had one week of traction through a ring around my head and weights attached to hospital bed and this was told that this will increases the flexibility of the curve and help achieve more correction at time of surgery.
After one week of traction I underwent uneventful scoliosis correction surgery. Really felt happy and surprised to see the result after surgery. My shape of the back is perfect and my confidence too. My long spinal fusion surgery had not restricted my flexibility and functional activities and I am able to enjoy walking and hiking along the jungles and in mount Himalayas.
I am 17 years and from West Bengal. I was suffering from low back pain at this young age because of condition called spondylolisthesis of spine. It happens when one of your vertebrae (spine bone) moves more than it should and slips out of place. It is very painful condition affecting my school, sports and daily living activities. I suffered this pain for few years and local doctors in our place told us that I will need spine fusion surgery but it is complicated so me and my family was worried that I had to spend rest of life with this pain.
One of our neighbour recommended Dr Muralidharan and at our first consultation Dr cleared all our fear about spine surgery which made us very comfortable and we went ahead with spine fusion surgery under his care. It was a successful operation. He prefers patient comfort and meets their demand very much. He arranged for my operation within very short time solving critical solution. I was shocked to see that I was able to wall normally without pain 10 hrs after spine fusion surgery.
I was in hospitals for 2 days and could not believe that straight from hospital I travelled back to my home in West Bengal. I was able to go to school after 2 weeks and resume sports after 3 months.
I am thankful to Dr Muralidharan for his good care and concern. He is the best.
I am 65 years old from Chennai and was suffering from severe pain in my lower back and legs. My walking and daily activities become so difficult because of pain. I met Dr Muralidharan and he told that the pain was because of ageing changes in my spine and the changes were so severe enough that one of spine bone (vertebra) has slipped forward on the other compressing the nerves (L5/S1 Degenerative Spondylolysthesis).
He explained problem clearly and all the options available and guided me to choose the best option. He suggested that surgery in the form of decompression and fusion will relieve the pain I am going through and improve my walking, function and my quality of life. I was worried about having surgery at age of 65 and but Dr Muralidharan explained that thorough pre-operative work up and careful planning will be done to minimize complication and make my hospital journey smooth. I was reassured by his skills and confidence and decided to go ahead with surgery under his care.
My surgery was successful and got discharged to home in 2 days and I was unbelievable I was able to walk pain free. My years of pain disappeared after surgery and I felt very young with my walking.
I thank Dr Muralidharan for his extraordinary care and the passion he has for his profession is commendable.
I am 27 years old from Chennai and I was struggling with low back pain and leg pain from disc bulge. The pain was disturbing my day to day work so much and I had seen few doctors and pain was not responding for medicines. My MRI scan showed disc bulge at L5/S1 level.
Inspite of taking medicines my pain continued to affect my work. I then met Dr Muralidharan with the hope of having some permanent remedy. After assessing me he suggested that my body was not able to clear the bulged portion of disc and I will benefit from surgery to remove the bulged portion of the disc. He explained that disc removal surgery is day care procedure and could be done as key hole with assistance of microscope or endoscope.
I Choose for Endoscopic Discectomy and all went well and few hours after surgery I was able to walk normally without any pain. There was no noticeable operation pain either. I got discharged same day of operation and within few days I was able to squat/sit on floor and do my work activities.
I felt comfortable under Dr Muralidharan’s team care and now I am leading life without back pain. He also stressed lot about back/postural/ergonomics for my spine health as most my work is desktop based.
I am Joyanti Roy 40 years old from Suri, West Bengal. I have been suffering from neck pain and left arm pain for more than 10 years. I tried several medicines, physiotherapy and various other treatments with several other doctors but did not relieve my pain. Every day I was living with the pain. Both my pain and the various medications will affect my mood and I become irritable. I was told I will need surgery but I was worried of risks of surgery. Finally I met Dr Muralidharan in December 2020 in Chennai and he gave me the confidence to go for surgery and I instantly got the trust and felt my care is in good hands.
I had disc fusion surgery called Anterior Cervical Decompression and Fusion (ACDF) and I was thrilled with the surgery result. My years of neck pain and arm pain disappeared and I could feel that immediately after the surgery. What surprised me was that even operation site pain was not there. I got discharged on same day of operation and returned to my home town after 5 days.
I am thankful forever to Dr Muralidharan for curing my spine problem and helping me to live a new life without pain.
I am Bharathi 56 years old from Chennai. I suddenly became unwell and was hospitalised at Apollo Specialty Hospital OMR under physician and I was diagnosed to have Tuberculosis (TB infection) in my lungs and scans showed spread to several organs including brain and spine. One day I started throwing fits (Seizure) because of TB spread to brain and when doctors attempted to protect my airway and breathing by moving the neck I started losing the sensation in my arms and legs and my limbs became weak. This is the time Dr Muralidharan saw me and explained that TB has spread to my neck and destroyed disc and spine bone (vertebra) and pressing spinal cord. He suggested urgent surgery to relieve the pressure on the spinal cord and fusion the infected part of spine to clear the infection.
I had two hour surgery and post surgery I felt improvement in my limbs. I was made to sit, stand and walk the next day after surgery. After 4 days of surgery I got discharged to home and had home physiotherapy for few weeks. I took my TB medications for 18 months and regular follow-up with X-rays.
Now almost 3 years and I am feeling good and my spine TB infection has been cleared and I have no problems.
Dr Muralidharan clearly explains the problem and the treatment and one of the best doctors I have come across.
I am Vasudevan 58 years old from Chennai. I am a fit and healthy active person. All of a sudden I started having mid back pain for no reason. I saw my ortho doctor who reassured that it is age-related back pain and gave some medicines and sent me for physiotherapy. My pain continued and day by day it was getting severe. After 1 month of pain I went and saw another specialist and had whole body scan which showed infection in my spine and it was reported as tuberculous (TB) infection and the specialist started me on anti-TB medications and gave me brace to support my back. Even after taking TB medications my back pain continued and I suddenly became bed ridden as pain restricted my walking. I was in continuous pain and the specialist told it that will take months for the medications to clear the TB infection. Four months gone and I was in terrible pain and my life was limited to bed. I was very depressed and starting looking for second opinion and found Dr Muralidharan from internet search.
My wife took all my medical reposts and scan to consult Dr Muralidharan to see anything can be done and I was not there at first consultation. After going through my records and scans he explained that treating the spine infection with assumption that its TB is not right thing as it could be other bacterial infection and firstly we need to isolate the infection organism through biopsy/culture and give right medicine to clear the infection. Secondly he said that infection has destroyed/eaten away lot of bone and disc compromising the stability of the spine and that is the reason for the continuous pain and difficulty in walking. On top of all he was the first person to analyse the sequence of events and give a possible cause for the problem. He was the first doctor to ask me whether I had any urine/chest infection before onset of back pain and I recalled of having urine infection 3 weeks before the onset of back pain and he suggested that it could be case of spread of infection to spine from prior urine infection.
We were completely astonished with his approach and confidence and I got admitted at Apollo OMR Hospital under his care. He stopped my TB medicines. I had surgery by Dr Muralidharan and his team and they sent lot of tissues for specimens, removed all dead unhealthy tissues and reconstructed by spine with screws, rods and mesh cage. Immediately after the surgery I wa s surprised that my 4 months of back pain has disappeared and was able to sit, stand and walk. As I was bedridden for few months my leg muscles been wasted and Dr Muralidharan had organized good home physiotherapy for a month to maximize my recovery.
Tissue test result came as the same bacteria that caused urine infection (E Coli) and I only had to have 3 months of antibiotics which cleared all my infection. We were amazed that he diagnosed at first consultation that my infection may not be TB when every other doctor I met believed blindly it as TB and was wrongly treating me and were stunned when the test result turned out as he diagnosed.
Two years from surgery I am normal now and regained my activity level. I must say Dr Muralidharan is very thorough in his patient evaluation, systematic, highly skilled and confident surgeon. Many thanks to Dr Muralidharan for giving my life and mobility back.
My mother is 74 years old and has multiple medical problems. She had fall in bathroom and since then she has been having back pain. Initially we thought that pain will subside with rest of few days but it did not. She had lot of difficulty in getting out of bed or turning in bed and walking. We took her to our family doctor and X-ray of her spine was done which showed fracture of one of her spine bone (vertebrae) and we were told that it’s because was mother’s age bone are soft (osteoporosis) and fracture easily will simply fall.
Initially our family doctor treated her with medicines and her pain continued the same despite medicines. Three weeks she suffered a lot and we could not see this so we thought of getting opinion from spine specialist. We choose Dr Muralidharan and after assessing mother he suggested to get MRI scan to see the extent of fracture.
After MRI scan he explained things clearly that fracture is not healing as expected at 1 month post fall and recommended that a simple pain relieving key hole day care spine surgery called Kyphoplasty where cement is injected into fracture spine bone after creating a void with special balloon and this will help relieve pain instantly and improve her walking and quality of life. We were worried about surgery as mother is aged with lot of medical problems but Dr Muralidharan reassured that leaving mother in pain is not acceptable and he said his team will take all precautions to minimize the risk of anesthesia and surgery. We were convinced and decided to go with the surgery plan as Dr Muralidharan suggested to put an end to mother’s sufferings.
Dr Muralidharan’s team co-ordinated pre-operative work up and anaesthetic assessment and we fixed a date for surgery. On day of Surgery went in the morning 6 am and my mother was wheeled in to theatre at 7 am and by 8:15 she was out of operation room. I was surprised to see her wide awake and talking clearly as she was wheeled in to recovery as her surgery was under under local anesthesia through key hole. She was able to turn in the bed, sit, stand and walk with in few hours of surgery. She got discharged on the same evening. We could not believe that mother at age of 74 had spine surgery and back home same day without any issues and all credit goes to Dr Muralidaharan and his team.
My mother’s hospital journey was so smooth because of the personalized care my Dr Muralidharan and excellent co-ordination of his entire team. At discharge Dr Muralidharan recommended bone strengthening medications to prevent further fractures and here lies his touch of holistic approach to patient care.
My mother is 69 years and active lady. She had a fall at home and first xray taken at local hospital near our home showed fracture of one of spine bone (D12) and initially ortho doctor prescribed medicines and suggested MRI and CT scan if pain does not improve or she struggles with walking. My mother pain continued for 3 weeks and her walking was getting bad so we decided to take scans as ortho doctor suggested.
After reviewing the scans and mother walking difficulty our ortho doctor suggested that mother has sustained severe form of vertebrae bone fracture which is unstable and putting some pressure on spinal cord so he suggested mother will need spine surgery and we see spine surgeon. We were so worried about surgery at mother’s age and did not take any decision but in the coming weeks she lost the confidence to walk and told us that she will spend rest of life in bed as she has so much fear for spine surgery. From being an active lady at 69 years of age who used to do most household works by herself we could not accept her current status of being in bed so we first decided to take spine specialist opinion and searched extensively to find out the best spine surgeon in our Chennai city. We picked Dr Muralidharan and took mother for consultation.
At first consultation with Dr Muralidharan he explained clearly to mother that her fracture in the spine bone is at critical part of spine and the fracture does not seem to be healing and will give lot of trouble if not addressed at this stage and surgery is the only option to relieve pain and improve her walking. He explained the problem, solution, risks and benefits everything to my mother in a clear and simple slang so she could understand and take decision. We were astonished to see that my mother at end of consultation she told Dr Muralidharan that she has 100% confidence in him and will undergo the surgery as he suggested and this decision was taken by mother without even consulting with us. Dr Muralidharan’s communication to patient is excellent and gains patient and family trust instantly.
My mother had surgery at Apollo Specialty Hospital OMR under Dr Muralidharan and his team care. She has her spine stabilization surgery with screws, rods and cement into spine bone. Her surgery went well without any complication and after surgery she stayed in recovery for 2 hrs and then was shifted to ward. Next day after operation she was able to sit and stand with less pain and few days from surgery she started walking without any support or assistance. She got discharged from hospital on 4th day and she is doing well. Five months now she is back on doing the household activities that she enjoys.
We thank Dr Muralidharan and his team for excellent care they provide to their patients.
I was 38 years old and never had any problems until I was hit by a bike whilst I was walking in the road. After that accident I had neck pain and started having some numbness and weakness in my arms/legs. I went to local hospital in my hometown and had MRI and CT scans done which showed some abnormality of my upper cervical bone and alignment with pressure to the spinal cord and doctors said I will need surgery. I did not have any clue what going on and worried about my spine surgery.
I travelled to Chennai and got admitted at Apollo Hospital and Dr Muralidharan did my surgery. At first consultation he explained clearly that part of my second neck bone has not formed/developed fully as it should be and this has been compromising the stability of the spine a condition called Os Odontoideum with C1/C2 Atlanto Axial Rotatory Dilocation and this accident has made it worse. He recommended that there is no option other than surgery to improved the alignment and relieve the pressure on spinal cord to give best chance for the spinal cord function recovery.
I was clear about what’s going on and agreed for surgery. My surgery was success and they fused my first and second spine bone (C1/C2 stabilisation and fusion). After surgery my arm and leg weakness improved and within a week I was back to normal. My hidden unkown problem has been fixed and am happy now.
I was told that upper neck surgeries are complex and complicated but Dr Muralidharan and his team made my hospital journey simpler and safe. My sincere thanks to Dr Muralidharan and his team.
My father in law had a serious issue with his spine. He underwent a spine stabilization surgery in August 2019 by an orthopaedic surgeon and it became an absolute lost cause. We went back to again and again to set it right, but to no avail.
By November of 2019 he was almost laid up in bed. At this time only we were referred to spine specialist Dr. Muralidaran at Apollo Hospital Perungudi. We made an appointment with him and he explained to us in very clear manner what the problem was and also what can be done to set it right. He recommended we go for revision spine surgery to correct the failure of previous spine surgery and this is the only option to relieve my father in law sufferings.
We were skeptical about undergoing such a major surgery again within 6 months time, considering his 73 years age and multiple medical problems including pacemaker. But Dr. Muralidaran was very confident that it can be performed with very minimal risk and this in turn gave us confidence.
He had advised us, how best the surgery can be done and he had told us that within 6- 8 weeks he will be able to walk. Cages and screws were put along the spine at 8 levels. He was in the hospital for 5 days and then he was back home where he recaptured very well. As assured by the doctor he was able to walk with help of walker in 2-3 weeks and within 8 weeks he was able to walk well.
After surgery follow up visits were also hassle free and we are so relieved now. He is walking much better without support and he is able to perform all his work by himself. He had prescribed very little medicine and always advising that taking lots of medicine is not good in the long run.
He is also always available if we have any issues or doubts. He is very approachable.
We are very thankful to Dr. Muralidaran for his help.
I am 43 years old IT professional. I have ankylosing spondylitis a condition where spine and joints get auto fused and become stiff. I was diagnosed with this condition in my late twenties and have had one of hip replaced in early thirties. As my spine become fused I started having stooped posture and lost ability to keep my head and spin in straight alignment.
In Jan 2019 I was in USA on onsite work. One day I slipped and fell and I thought it was simple fall but I started having back pain so I went hospital in USA where I had Xrays, CT and MRI scans and after reviewing the scans doctor told me that there in fracture in my spine and I was advised spine brace. I have been managing with brace for three months till I return to Chennai.
After reaching Chennai I consulted Dr Muralidharan who after assessment clearly told me that because of my background Ankylosing Spondylitis and fused spine I had sustained these spine fracture from simple fall and this fracture will not heal if we don’t do surgery to stabilise the spine. I was worried about the surgery but was convinced with Dr Muralidharan explanation that I don’t have any other option and high chance this fracture to get worse and get complicated with spinal cord compression. I was convinced with the way he approached my case and agreed to go ahead with surgery. I know my case because of ankylosing spondylitis is not easy as my bones, joints and spine is all stiff and soft and can fracture easily with any movement but had full trust in Dr Muralidharan and his team.
My surgery went very well without any issues and my spine fracture was stabilised with 12 screws and 2 rods. After surgery when I stood for first time I was surprised to see that my spine and head alignment and my stooping is better a bit and Dr Muralidharn said he used the fracture as an opportunity to correct my alignment. I must say very clever.
I had some operation site pain but after a week all my pain settled and in the next few months my spine fracture started healing and I discarded the brace.
I thank Dr Muralidharan and his team for sorting me out.
My mother is 58 years old and we live in Delhi. My mother was complaining of back pain for few months. She was normally healthy and active person. I saw few doctors locally and was told its age related back pain. But her pain become tremendous and continous and we were worried. I decided to take my mother to Chennai for consultation with spine specialist Dr Muralidharan. I found Dr Muralidharan through internet and felt my mother would get best and safe treatment in his hands.
At very first consultation Dr Muralidharan said he is too concerned of my mother’s pain given her age , continuous pain and pain site being mid-back and he arranged for urgent MRI scan which showed completed destruction of one of spine bone with pressure on spinal cord and he said new may not be good and arranged further investigations including PET CT. As he though PET CT showed cancer in lung with spread to spine. It was shocking news to us but the way Dr
Muralidharan broke the news to my mother and to our family made us to easily digest the fact that mother has lung cancer and have to move forward with further treatment. First he recommended spine surgery to stabilise the spine to relieve her pain and pressure on spinal cord which we agreed and surgery went well without any issues. After surgery she was walking normally and she become pain free. He also arranged Oncology specialist to see my mother for lung cancer treatment.
Dr Muralidharan is extremely helpful and great surgeon.
